Core values of inclusivity and belonging are at the heart of everything we do. ❤️🖤 Unified Sports is a perfect display of these values, and we’re so grateful to see it thriving at HMS! 👏

“Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” — President John F. Kennedy 🇺🇸 Last week, our 8th graders took these words to heart as they presented their student-led civic action projects to the community. Students have worked hard over the past month to explore different civic issues that matter to them. Topics included improving cell reception in downtown Hingham, improving school lunches, and increasing student involvement in curriculum decisions. Through brainstorming, building consensus, researching root causes, and developing action plans, they have shown what it means to be active, engaged, and responsible citizens. The future is bright for the leaders of the Class of 2029. 👏

Hingham Middle School students took the stage to demonstrate their talent in this year’s Poetry Out Loud contest. ELA teachers in all three grades invited volunteers to select a poem that spoke to them, memorize it, and rehearse their delivery for the contest. Congratulations to our winners and to all who stepped up to the mic! 👏

Civics in Action! 🗳️💬 Last week, Hingham Middle School 8th grade social studies classrooms welcomed local leaders for “Community Expert Day” as part of their Student-Led Action Civics Project. Students met with community decision makers to ask questions and gather information about their selected civics issues, such as school start times, cell reception, and water quality. Through this work, students are learning how to be active, informed citizens by researching issues that matter to them, working to understand root causes, and developing and implementing action plans to address them.

As Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re excited to spotlight Hingham Middle School’s fantastic after school workshop series that took place this past month as part of One Book, One School. The activities focused on celebrating the arts and culture of Asians and Pacific Islanders in America. Students had the opportunity to explore hands-on traditions like Chinese ink blowing, calligraphy, Japanese flower arranging (Ikebana), and origami. Many of the workshops were led by HMS students of AAPI descent who generously shared their personal traditions and stories with the school community.

Last week, our 5th graders spent the day at Hingham Middle School for Move Up Day! They explored their future school, met some of their teachers, and heard from Principal Derek Smith about what a typical day is like at HMS. He shared what to expect in 6th grade and all the exciting after school clubs students can join. They also took part in a scavenger hunt, discovering important spots like the guidance office and the nurse's office while starting to feel more at home in their new school. We loved having you, Class of 2032. We cannot wait to see you at HMS this fall!
